AIGREFEUILLE (Charles d’). History of the City of Montpellier, from its origins to the present day. – [...] Part Two, covering the origins of its Church [...]. Montpellier, Jean Martel, then Rigaud père & fils, 1737–1739. 2 folio volumes, marbled calfskin, double scalloped fillet with fleurons at the corners, coat of arms in the centre surmounted by a supralibris in a gilt cartouche, decorated spine, red edges (contemporary binding). First edition of this important history of the city of Montpellier, complete with the second volume, published two years later, devoted to the ecclesiastical history of the city. The work is illustrated with three large, fold-out maps, drawn by Jean Villaret, showing the town and citadel of Montpellier with its surroundings, the town of Montpellier before the Wars of Religion, and the Siege of Montpellier in 1622. Charles d’Aigrefeuille (1668–1743) was a canon of Saint-Pierre Cathedral in Montpellier. A gift copy bound with the city’s coat of arms, presented to Dom Louis Hollande, a Maurist monk from Montpellier, who took his vows at the Priory of La Daurade in Toulouse in 1622 and died as a subdeacon in Nîmes in 1779, bearing this bookplate on the covers: ‘D. Lud. Holland. concivi benemer. Præf. et Coss. libentissime D. D.’, dated 1773. Slight losses to the headbands and corners, a few scattered foxing spots, tears without loss to the folded pages.
