[ATLAS]. CASSINI DE THURY (César-François), MONTIGNY (Étienne Mignot de) and Jean-Rodolphe PERRONET. [Map of the dioceses of the Province of Languedoc. Paris, Imprimerie du Cabinet du Roi, 1781]. 2 large folio volumes, fawn half-shagreen with corners, decorated spine (19th-century binding). A very rare atlas of maps of the dioceses of the Province of Languedoc, surveyed on the orders of Arthur-Richard Dillon, Archbishop and Primate of Narbonne, under the direction of Cassini, Montigny and Perronet, and reduced by Louis Capitaine in 1781. The atlas comprises 23 (out of 24) large fold-out maps engraved on copper by Aldring, with lettering by Bourgoin, including a General Map of the province of Languedoc serving as a reference map, and 22 detailed maps of the dioceses of Montpellier, Nîmes, Alais, Uzès, Narbonne, Carcassonne, Agde, Lodève, Castres, Saint-Pons, Toulouse, Lavaur, Rieux, Comminges, Montauban, Saint-Papoul, Albi, Alet, Mirepoix, Viviers, Le Puy and Mende. A coloured map of the Hérault department by Alexis Donnet and Ernest Grangez, published around 1850, has been added at the beginning of the first volume, and at the beginning of the second volume there is a very fine folded print depicting the Ordinary Session of the Estates of Languedoc, drawn and engraved by Bernard Picart in 1704 and retouched with a burin by Claude Duflos in 1723. The map of the Diocese of Béziers is missing. Small tears in the folds of the maps, previously repaired on the reverse; tears without loss on the map of the Hérault; a small worm-eaten area on the map of Mende; a few maps detached from their tabs; minor surface wear to the bindings.
