GARIEL (Pierre). Series præsulum Magalonensium et Monspeliensium. Toulouse, Jean Boude, 1664–1665. 2 parts in one folio volume, speckled sheepskin, gilt fillet, decorated spine, red edges (18th-century binding). Second, expanded edition – preferable to that of 1652 – of this important work on the ecclesiastical history of the Diocese of Montpellier (whose episcopal see was at Maguelone until 1536), composed by Canon Pierre Gariel (1584–1674). The illustrations include a frontispiece titleplate engraved by Joachim Séguenot, a portrait of the author by François de La Roussière, a fold-out map of the Diocese of Montpellier by Jean Cavalier, and a vignette pasted into the text on p. 31. Added to this copy is the beautiful and rare folded view of ‘Montpellier, city, the first university to establish a faculty of medicine’, published by Gariel in 1665 in his *Idée de la ville de Montpellier*, bearing the mark of the Parisian engraver Nicolas Picart. Minor gaps filled in the white space of the printed title page; wormholes at the beginning of the volume; foxing and pinholes; a few tears in the cover and minor damage to the binding.
