Description
[WHITE PENITENTS]. Book of Hours for the White Penitents of Montpellier. Marseille, Pierre Mesnier, 1700. Small folio, red morocco leather, compartments decorated with fish-scale patterns in the centres, bordered by gilt fleurons, an oval medallion with a radiant dove in the centre, decorated spine, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Second edition, revised and corrected from the original of 1654, followed by the liturgical ceremonial established by Brother Henri de La Croix. The existence of the Confraternity of the White Penitents of Montpellier, which met in the Chapel of Sainte-Foy, has been documented since 1517 and continues to this day. It has counted amongst its members certain illustrious figures, such as Frédéric Mistral. Printed in two columns in red and black within a frame of double lines. The work is illustrated with 24 copperplate engravings bearing Landry’s excudit. A very unusual contemporary binding featuring the brotherhood’s emblem, adorned with compartments in a scale pattern. It is probably of Marseilles workmanship. The binding is scuffed, with one cap missing; the joints and corners are worn; there is a margin loss in one engraving on p. 133 and a repair to the last leaf; foxing.
