PHILIPPI (Jean). Edicts and ordinances of the King concerning the authority and jurisdiction of the Courts of Aides of France, with particular reference to that of Montpellier. – Relevant judgements of the Court of Aides of Montpellier. Montpellier, Jean Gillet, 1597. 2 parts in one folio volume, half-leather (contemporary binding). Second edition of this important legal treatise published by Jean Gillet, the first printer to establish himself in Montpellier. Jean Gillet, a Protestant, belonged to a family that had long been involved in printing in Lyon. It was in 1594 that, yielding to the entreaties of the city’s consuls, he came to settle in Montpellier as a printer and bookseller. He died during the siege of Montpellier in 1622. Under the Ancien Régime, the ‘cours des aides’ were responsible for hearing appeals in tax disputes. The work also discusses the royal ordinances relating to the regulation of the taille, aides, gabelle and other taxes for the regions of Languedoc, Quercy and Guyenne, which fell within the jurisdiction of the court of Montpellier. The binding is worn, with slight losses and scuffs; there are minor, insignificant stains and discolouration on a few leaves.
