RENOUVIER (Jules). Monuments of certain former dioceses of Lower Languedoc, described in terms of their history and architecture. Montpellier: Castel, Sevalle, Virenque, 1840. 6 parts in one in-4 volume, red half-shagreen with corners, blind-stamped edging along the fore-edges and corners, spine adorned with rich gilded decoration, untrimmed (contemporary binding). A rare and sought-after first edition, printed in a run of only 100 copies. The work brings together six monographs devoted to Valmagne Abbey, the church at Maguelonne, Saint-Guillem-du-Désert Abbey, two women’s monasteries: Vignogoul and Saint-Félix de Montseau; the church at Lodève and the priory of Saint-Michel de Grandmont; and finally, Valmagne Abbey and the priory of Saint-Pierre-de-Rhèdes. The work is illustrated with 56 lithographic plates based on drawings by Bonaventure Laurens. Bound together with this volume, by the same author: *Various Monuments from Several Ancient Dioceses of Lower Languedoc*. Ibid., 1841. First edition of this supplement to the previous work, illustrated with 8 two-tone lithographic plates based on Laurens’s drawings. These are views depicting the Saint-Maurice dolmen, the Ambrussum bridge, the tower of Puissalicon, the Château de la Roquette, etc. A very fine copy comprising a total of 64 plates by Bonaventure Laurens. A few foxing spots; some plates and leaves are slightly browned; the tops and corners are very slightly rubbed; the caption on the dolmen plate is trimmed. The covers of the monographs and the supplement are missing.
