TAYLOR (Isidore), Charles NODIER and Alphonse de CAILLEUX. Picturesque and Romantic Journeys through Ancient France. The Languedoc. Paris, Firmin Didot, 1833–1837. 5 volumes in large folio, green half-shagreen with corner pieces (modern binding). First edition of this monumental work of topographical literature. The *Voyages in Ancient France*, born of the friendship that united the three authors, were published in twenty large folio volumes between 1820 and 1878. All the regions of France are represented therein. It is ‘one of the earliest and most significant French works of lithography’, according to Brunet, but also one of the very first revivals of Gothic art. This section devoted to Languedoc – comprising Haut and Bas Languedoc, Roussillon, Quercy and Vivaray – forms the fourth series of the collection, published in 146 instalments. The illustrations comprise a frontispiece and 546 lithographic plates based on works by Watelet, Théophile Fragonard, Chenovard, Dauzats, Chapuy, Viollet-le-Duc, Challamel, Rouargue, Tony Johannot, etc., mostly mounted on laid paper.
