[VIC (Claude de) and Joseph VAISSETTE]. A General History of Languedoc, with notes and supporting documents, compiled from the original authors and titles, and enriched with various historical sources. Paris, Jacques Vincent, 1730–1745. 5 folio volumes, fawn calfskin, decorated spine, red edges (contemporary binding). First edition of this essential work on the history of Languedoc up to 1743. This monumental synthesis, published by Doms de Vic and Vaissette, two Maurist scholars, is a ‘famous and rightly esteemed work’ (Saffroy) and ‘one of the finest regional histories of our provinces’ (Brunet). The illustrations comprise 4 maps with coloured borders (including 3 double-page maps) and 35 separate plates (including 10 double-page plates) engraved in intaglio after Cadas, Despax, Dufour, Gleyses, Nolin and Rollin, to which are added a title vignette repeated in each volume, 54 headpieces, 56 initials and 36 tailpieces engraved by Cochin, Tardieu and de Poilly. A fine copy in uniform contemporary bindings. Two cap bands are trimmed and a third has been restored; some signs of wear and a few foxing spots. Brunet, V, 1029 – Saffroy, no. 26377.
