BARRÈRE (Pierre). An Essay on the Natural History of Equinoctial France, or a Survey of the Plants, Animals and Minerals Found on the Island of Cayenne, the Remire Islands, along the Coastline, and on the Mainland of French Guiana. Paris, Piget, 1741. 12mo, fawn calfskin, decorated spine, red edges (contemporary binding). First edition, dedicated to the Count of Maurepas. Pierre Barrère (1690–1755), a physician and naturalist born and died in Perpignan, had been sent on a mission to French Guiana by order of the king. He stayed there for three years and published this essay on the natural history of French Guiana and, two years later, a *Nouvelle relation de la France équinoxiale* in which he deals more specifically with the indigenous peoples and French colonisation. Upper hinge and corners restored; lower hinge split. Sabin, no. 3603.
