Description
BASAN (Pierre-François). A collection of engravings based on the paintings in the collection of His Grace the Duke of Choiseul. Paris, published by the author, 1771. In-4, red morocco, perforated roulette decorated with fleurons at the corners and centre, decorated spine, wavy fillet inside, gilt edges (contemporary binding). First edition of this sumptuous collection, entirely engraved in intaglio; ‘a very fine collection, well engraved, based on the magnificent paintings which the Duke of Choiseul sold following his fall from favour in 1772’, writes Cohen. The volume comprises a frontispiece by Choffard (with the engraved dedication on the reverse), an unsigned portrait of the Duke of Choiseul, 12 pp. of descriptive notes and 128 engravings interpreted by Baquoy, Binet, Delvaux, Dunker, Germain, Ingouf, Ponce, Wiehl and others, under the direction of the publisher and print dealer Pierre-François Basan. This copy is further enhanced by a second, unsigned portrait of the Duke of Choiseul. Plate 87 is entitled ‘Lot and his daughters’; plates nos. 10 and 39 are in double states; and plate no. 89 is on fine paper. A very attractive copy in a contemporary red morocco binding, with the selling prices of the paintings written in pen on the reverse of the plates.
