CABINET DES FÉES (Le), or A Selected Collection of Fairy Tales and Other Wondrous Tales. Amsterdam; Paris, Rue et Hôtel Serpente [Cuchet], 1785–1789. 41 volumes in-8, marbled half-basane with vellum corners, plain decorated spine, speckled edges (contemporary binding). First edition of one of the finest collections of fairy tales. This monumental work, compiled by Charles-Joseph de Mayer and Charles-Georges Garnier, brings together tales by Perrault, Fénelon, Mme d’Aulnoy, Hamilton, Caylus, Rousseau, *The Thousand and One Nights* translated by Galland, etc., in the first 36 volumes, followed by an introduction on the origins of the genre, notes on the authors and a list of their works in the 37th volume, and a ‘Sequel to the Thousand and One Nights’, translated by Dom Chavis and Jacques Cazotte in the final four volumes. A very fine set of illustrations by Marillier, comprising 120 full-page plates engraved on copper by Berthet, Biosse, Choffard, Delignon and others. These engravings, in their first edition, ‘revolutionised the illustration of fairy tales through their number, their size – no longer vignettes occupying a third of a page but full-page plates –, the quality of their execution and their evocative power ’ (Once Upon a Time… Fairy Tales, BnF). A decorative set in contemporary binding. A few wormholes and minor damage to the bindings, some foxing, 2 ff. loose in vol. XI, a hole in the half-title page of vol.
