Description
[CAYLUS (Anne-Claude de)]. A Collection of Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek and Roman Antiquities. Paris, Desaint & Saillant, Tilliard, 1761–1767. 7 volumes in-4, red morocco, triple gilt rule, coat of arms in the centre, decorated spine, inner lace, gilt edges (contemporary binding). First edition of this monumental work on Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek, Roman and Gallic archaeology from the 18th century. The first volume is from the 1761 reprint, but ‘few copies have the first volume dated 1752’ (Cohen). As for the seventh volume, it is a posthumous supplement, published by M. de Bombarde based on the manuscripts of the Comte de Caylus. The illustrations comprise 6 allegorical frontispieces, a portrait by Claude Littret, 828 plates of antiquities and numerous vignettes within the text, depicting a vast array of monuments and objects, including sculptures, pottery, coins, jewellery, tablets, maps, plans, etc. A copy bound in red morocco bearing the coat of arms of Antoine du Bourg, Lord of Sainte-Croix, Argit and Montgrillet, a judge of Bresse in the 18th century, based on Guigard. From the libraries of John Towneley, with an ex-libris, and Anatole de Claye, with an ex-libris bearing the motto ‘Pax et Patria’. The binding of the 4th volume has been restored (re-applied panels on the spine). Some signs of wear to the bindings; rare foxing.
