Description
DANCOURT (Florent Carton, known as). Theatrical Works. New, revised and corrected edition. Paris, published by the associated booksellers, 1760. 12 volumes, small 12mo, red morocco, triple gilt fillet, coat of arms in the centre, plain decorated spine, inner lace, gilt edges (contemporary binding). A collected edition described by Tchemerzine as ‘the most complete and highly regarded’ of the works by the father of modern vaudeville. It brings together 53 plays by Florent Carton, known as Dancourt (1661–1725), an actor and prolific playwright, a member of the Comédie-Française from 1685 until his retirement in 1718. The musical notation for the sung arias is printed at the end of each volume. An exceptional copy in red morocco leather bearing the coat of arms of Marie-Thérèse of Savoy (1773–1805), Countess of Artois following her marriage in 1773 to the future Charles X, sister-in-law of Louis XVI and the Count of Provence (Louis XVIII), who had married her elder sister. She died, however, before her husband’s coronation, whilst in exile in Graz. ‘The library of the Countess of Artois, assembled by her secretary Félix Nogaret, can rival the most important collections of the century’ (Quentin-Bauchart). Her books were generally bound in red morocco, with no ornamentation other than her coat of arms and a triple border. A prestigious copy, cited by Quentin-Bauchart, from the libraries of Baron Pichon (1869, no. 695); Édouard Bocher (1811–1900), brother-in-law of Valentine Delessert, administrator of the Orléans family’s estates (cited by Quentin Bauchart); Robert Hoe (1912, IV, no. 327), who had acquired part of the Bocher collection by private agreement, with bookplate; Mortimer L. Schiff (1938, III, no. 1477), with bookplates; and Major John Roland Abbey (1967, III, no. 1807), with bookplates. Minor, insignificant damage to the top edge of the first volume.
