Description
DURET (Louis). *Interpretationes et enarrationes in magni Hippocratis Coacas prænotiones*. Lyon, S. Piestre & J.-B. Delamollière, 1784. Folio, red half-maroquin with corner pieces, decorated spine, gilded ex-præmio at the tail, gilt edges (contemporary binding). A new edition of the commentaries by the great physician Louis Duret (1527–1586) on the ‘Prénotions de Cos’, an anonymous treatise from the Hippocratic Corpus, based on the edition published by Adrien Pelerin-Chrouet in Leiden in 1737. A copy presented by the Paris School of Medicine to Simon-Guillaume-Gabriel Bruté de Rémur (1779–1839), a native of Rennes, as the first prize in the practical school for Year X, bearing the inscription ‘ex-præmio’ and a seal on the title page. Bruté de Rémur, however, abandoned medicine to become a priest in 1808. As a missionary, he crossed the Atlantic and served as head of St Mary’s College in Baltimore until 1826; in 1834, he was appointed the first bishop of Vincennes, in Indiana and eastern Illinois. A small tear to a page edge.
