Description
FÉNELON. The Adventures of Telemachus. Paris, Imprimerie de Monsieur, 1785. 2 volumes, quarto, red morocco leather, double border of two gilt chains and two interlaced bands in the centre, spine with faux raised bands highlighted by strips of mosaic green morocco leather, gilt inner lace, sky-blue silk endpapers and linings, gilt edges (Bound by Bisiaux). A luxurious edition typeset by Pierre-François Didot using the new typefaces from his foundry. It is one of the first French works printed on vellum paper, manufactured by the Montgolfier paper mills in Annonay. The edition was specially designed to accommodate the series of drawings by Charles Monnet exhibited at the 1771 Salon and engraved two years later by Jean-Baptiste Tilliard. This series comprises 72 inset plates, along with a frontispiece by Montulay and 24 plates summarising the cantos, all printed on laid paper. A copy in luxurious neoclassical bindings by Pierre-Joseph Bisiaux, bearing an engraved label with his second address, Rue du Foin Saint-Jacques, where he practised around 1787. Light water stains in both volumes, slightly affecting the upper cover of the first; a few scattered foxing spots.
