[GARNIER (Charles)]. Imaginary Journeys, Dreams, Visions and Kabbalistic Novels. Amsterdam and Paris, Rue et Hôtel Serpente [Cuchet], 1787–1789. 39 volumes in-8, green morocco, triple gilt fillet, decorated spine, coat of arms at the tail, red title and volume number labels, interior lace, gilt edges (contemporary binding). First edition of this famous collection devoted to works of the imagination. Launched in 1787 by Charles-Georges-Thomas Garnier (1746–1795), the publisher of *Le Cabinet des fées*, it comprises seventy-four fictional tales by Defoe, Swift, Mercier, Cyrano de Bergerac, Voltaire, Berington, and numerous lesser-known authors. The collection comprises thirty-six volumes, plus three additional volumes containing the *Histoire des naufrages* compiled by Jean-Louis Deperthes. The collected tales are divided into three categories: 1. Imaginary journeys, 2. Dreams and visions, 3. Kabbalistic and magical novels, and cover themes as modern as utopia, exploration, the fantastic, and even scientific speculation. First edition featuring Marillier’s fine illustrations, comprising 76 separate engravings based on his drawings by Berthet, Delignon, Delvaux, Delaunay, Langlois, Patas and others. An exceptional copy in green morocco leather bearing the coat of arms of Lafaurie de Monbadon. The two subscription prospectuses for the collection have been bound into the first volume.
