GRAVELOT (Hubert-François) and Charles-Nicolas COCHIN. *Iconologie par figures, ou traité complet des allégories, emblèmes, etc.* Paris, Lattré, n.d. [c. 1789]. 4 volumes in-12, calfskin with a scaly pattern and gilt roulette, smooth decorated spine, interior lace, gilt edges (contemporary binding). A charming work of iconology, the project for which was conceived by Gravelot and continued by Cochin in collaboration with Gaucher. The illustrations include two portraits of the artists engraved by Gaucher after Quentin de La Tour and Monnet, four frontispiece titles engraved by Choffard, Ghendt and Legrand after Gravelot, and 201 (out of 202) plates engraved by the finest artists after drawings by Gravelot and Cochin. With the exception of two new plates, these figures had previously been published by the authors, in a different order, in the *Almanach iconologique* (1765–1781). A second edition of *Iconologie par figures* appeared in 8vo format in 1791. A fine copy in attractive neoclassical bindings. From the library of Baron Marc de Lassus (1955, no. 58), with bookplate. A few of the full-length figures are slightly shorter; small marginal holes on 2 plates and 1 folio, a few pinholes and foxing. Cohen, 456.
