HIRSCHFELD (Christian Cay Lorenz). Theory of the Art of Gardening. Leipzig, Weidmann & Reich, 1779–1785. 5 volumes in-4, marbled sheepskin, triple gilt rule, decorated spine, marbled edges (contemporary binding). First French edition of this first-rate work on the art of gardens, published at the same time as the original German edition by the same publishers. The illustrations comprise 5 title vignettes, 7 separate plates, one of which is folded, and 231 figures in the text, including 34 full-page plates, engraved in intaglio after Brandt, Zingg, Schuricht and Weinlig. The French translation is the work of Giovanni Francesco Salvemini da Castiglione (1708–1791), a Tuscan man of letters and mathematician who had been summoned to Prussia by Frederick II to teach at the Artillery School, and later to head the mathematics department at the Berlin Academy. *Theorie der Gartenkunst*, better known and more widely circulated in its French edition, is the masterpiece of Hirschfeld (1742–1792), a German garden designer who was an ardent advocate of the English garden, or landscaped garden, although he had never visited England. The work deals with the aesthetic foundations of his art, as well as horticulture (trees, lawns, paths, country buildings, etc.), scenography (monuments, ruins, grottoes and hermitages, etc.), and provides a description of the gardens at Sphienberg, Schanwzee, Zelle, Fredensburg, Gravenstein, Eckhof, etc. A copy well bound in its original binding.
