[IMHOF (Andreas Lazarus von) and Nicolas GUEUDEVILLE]. *Le Grand théâtre historique, ou nouvelle histoire universelle, tant sacrée que profane, depuis la création du monde jusqu’au commencement du XVIIIe siècle*. Leiden, Pierre van der Aa, 1703. 5 tomes in 3 folio volumes, fawn calfskin, coat of arms in the centre, decorated spine, marbled edges (contemporary binding). First French edition, freely translated from the German and considerably expanded by Nicolas Gueudeville, based on Andreas Lazarus von Imhof’s *Historischer Bildersaal*. It is sought after for its abundant engravings in intaglio, including a frontispiece title page engraved by Jacobus Baptist after Ottmar Elliger, a double-page dedication to the Crown Prince of Prussia engraved by Jan van Vianen after Jan Goeree, a double-page world map, one (of two) fold-out plates by Romeyn de Hooghe, and over 500 illustrations within the text. A copy bearing the coat of arms of Louis-César de Crémeaux (1679–1747), Marquis d’Entragues, Lieutenant-General in the government of Mâconnais, who had amassed a significant collection comprising memoirs, novels and historical works, bearing his armorial bookplate (on which, as is often the case, his name has been scraped off). The 10 portraits of emperors and one fold-out plate are missing. Headbands missing, bindings worn, minor repairs, foxing, and scattered stains and water marks.
