ISOCRATES. Complete Works… translated into French by the Reverend Auger. Paris, Debure, eldest son & Théophile Barrois, 1781. 3 volumes in-8, red morocco, triple gilt fillet with fleurons at the corners, coat of arms surmounted by a motto in the centre, plain decorated spine, interior lace, gilt edges (contemporary binding). First edition of the French translation of Isocrates’ speeches and pleadings by the scholar Abbé Athanase Auger (1734–1792), Vicar-General of Lescar, who was elected that same year to the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. He dedicated it to the bishop of his diocese, Marc-Antoine de Noé. It is one of the most comprehensive early editions of the Greek orator’s works, to which the publisher has appended similar speeches drawn from Plato, Lysias, Thucydides, Xenophon, Demosthenes, Antiphon, Gorgias, Antisthenes and Alcidamas. A very fine signed copy bound in red morocco leather bearing the coat of arms of Marc-Antoine de Noé (1724–1802), the last Bishop of Lescar from 1763 to 1790 and Commander of the royal, military and hospitaller orders of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem, an order whose bindings bear the motto ‘Atavis et armis’. The quires are slightly foxed; there are traces of a damp stamp on the title page of the first volume.
