Description
JULIEN (Roch-Joseph). Topographical and Military Atlas, comprising the Kingdom of Bohemia, the Margravates of Moravia and Lusatia, the Duchy of Silesia, Upper and Lower Saxony, the borders of the Upper Rhine and Westphalia, and general maps of these states and of the current theatre of war in Germany. Paris, published by the author, 1758. In-4, marbled calfskin, plain spine with gilt decoration, red edges (contemporary binding). First edition of this superb atlas of the theatre of the Seven Years’ War (1756–1763), depicting the Electorate of Saxony and the Kingdom of Bohemia. The publisher dedicated it to Maria Theresa of Austria (1717–1780), Empress of the Holy Roman Empire and Queen of Hungary and Bohemia. The work comprises an engraved title page, 65 double- or triple-page plates and a large folded map, all engraved on copper. These plates include, in the introductory sections, a folding frontispiece (a cartouche adorned with a portrait of the dedicatee), an assembly plan and two reduced-scale general maps, as well as a table of explanations and scales; followed, in the atlas proper, by 50 double-page maps (nos. 1–5, 7–43, 25A–B, 31A–B, 37A–B, 41A–B), plus six half-sheets (attached to maps nos. 5, 12, 18, 24, 30 and 43); to which the publisher has appended a Map of the Electorate of Hanover (in 4 folios), a map of the Margraviate of Brandenburg, a General Map of Germany drawn up by J. G. Eisenschmidt and revised and expanded by J. B. Homan (in 4 folios), a plan of the Battle of Chotzemitz, and finally a large folded plan of the city of Berlin. An elegant copy mounted on tabs and well bound in its original binding. Enclosed is a prospectus from the publisher entitled *New Catalogue of Maps for an Understanding of the German War…* (4 pp., in-4), including, in particular, the bookbinder’s instructions for this atlas. According to these instructions, our copy is missing the map of the Electorate of Saxony and its borders, and that of the Duchy of Pomerania. The upper edge is slightly scuffed and there is a slight knock to one corner; there are small, faint water stains in the margins of a few maps. Phillips, no. 3029.
