LONGUERUE (Louis Dufour de). Historical and Geographical Description of France. Paris, Jacques-Henry Pralard, 1719. 2 volumes in one folio volume, olive morocco, triple gilt fillet, fleurs-de-lis at the corners, decorated spine, interior lace, marbled edges (contemporary binding). First edition of this remarkable account of the state of France at the death of Louis XIV and during the Regency. A first-printing copy, with the full title and the dedicatory epistle to the King, the work having been corrected at the press due to passages favourable to the Austrian Emperor’s territorial claims on the former kingdoms of Burgundy and Arles contained within the text. It was republished in 1722 under a new title, without the author’s name, as he had not approved the changes made by the editorial committee headed by the Abbé Béraud. The engravings comprise seven (out of nine) fine double-page maps, drawn by Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville, two title medallions, four headpieces and four initials engraved by Poilly after designs by Duflocq and Hallé. A copy bound in contemporary olive-coloured morocco. From the library of Emilio Terry (1890–1969), the renowned Franco-Cuban architect, interior designer and landscape architect (1972, no. 186). Two maps are missing. Caps and corners worn; scuffing on the covers.
