LONGUS. *The Pastoral Loves of Daphnis and Chloe*. S.l.n.n. [Paris, Coustellier], 1745. Small 8vo, red morocco, triple gilt rule, plain decorated spine, interior lace, endpapers of paper with gilt stars, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Second printing of the famous illustration known as the ‘Régent’ edition, comprising a frontispiece by Antoine Coypel and 29 plates (including 13 double-page plates) engraved by Benoît Audran after compositions by Philippe d’Orléans, with the exception of the last, known as the ‘petits pieds’, which is attributed to the Comte de Caylus. In addition, there are 4 end-piece engravings by Cochin, created especially for this edition. The French translation of Longus’s pastoral is by Jacques Amyot. An elegant copy in contemporary red morocco. A slight marginal discolouration on the first two leaves. Cohen, 652.
