Description
LULLY (Jean-Baptiste). *Phaëton*, a tragedy set to music. Paris, at the entrance to the Royal Academy of Music, 1709. Folio, marbled calfskin, decorated spine, variegated edges (contemporary binding). Second edition of this score, entirely engraved by Henry de Baussen, with a lovely engraved vignette at the head of each act. The opera *Phaëton*, composed by Lully to a libretto by Philippe Quinault, was premiered at Versailles in 1683. The plot is drawn from Ovid’s *Metamorphoses*. From the library of the Château de Cormes, bearing an ex-libris stamp. Missing sections at the head and foot of the pages and on one spine; worm-eaten edges on the first 26 leaves.
