Description
MASSILLON (Jean-Baptiste). Sermons. Paris, the widow of Estienne & Sons, Jean Hérissant, 1745. 8 in-12 volumes (of 9), red morocco, triple fillet, coat of arms in the centre, decorated spine, interior lace, gilt edges on marbled paper (contemporary binding). A major collected edition of the sermons by Massillon (1663–1742), the famous Oratorian preacher, Bishop of Clermont and member of the Académie Française, published by his nephew Joseph Massillon (1704–1780). This copy comprises eight volumes of Sermons, subtitled: ‘Short Lent’, ‘Advent’, ‘Lent’ (4 vols.), ‘Panegyrics’, ‘Funeral Orations’ and ‘Religious Professions’. A superb copy in red morocco bearing the coat of arms of Jacques-Bonne Gigault de Bellefonds (1698–1746), who served briefly as Archbishop of Paris in the year of his death, having previously been Bishop of Bayonne from 1735 to 1741 and Archbishop of Arles from 1741 to 1746. This prelate was noted for his constant opposition to the Jansenists. A few days before his death, he condemned Diderot’s *Pensées philosophiques*. This copy was listed in the *Bulletin Morgand* (Nov. 1896, nos. 28218 and 28222). The volume of the *Mystères* is missing; it was sold separately by the Morgand bookshop (no. 28221).
