[NICOLE (Pierre)]. Essays on Morality, comprising various treatises on several important duties. Paris, Guillaume Desprez, 1700–1703. 9 tomes in 10 in-12 volumes, Jansenist red morocco, red morocco linings, gilt lace on the inside, gilt edges on marbled paper (contemporary binding). New edition of the first eight tomes (1701–1703) and first edition of the ninth (1700). The Essays on Morality by the Jansenist theologian Pierre Nicole (1625–1695) were among the most famous and widely studied works on moral reflection from the late 17th century until the Revolution. This copy is bound in elegant, lined Jansenist bindings, attributable to Luc-Antoine Boyet, the King’s bookbinder from 1698 until his death in 1733. The bookbinder has divided the sixth volume, which is thicker than the others, into two volumes. A handwritten bookplate of Monsieur de Croissy at the bottom of the title pages. From the library of the Countess of Chamillart de La Suze, née Henriette-Charlotte du Bourg de Bozas (1811–1858), with a coat-of-arms bookplate (glued onto the upper endpaper of all volumes except the first). A skilfully restored cap.
