ORVILLE (Jacques-Philippe d’). *Sicula, quibus Siciliæ veteris rudera, antiquitatum tabulis, illustrantur*. Amsterdam, Gérard Tielenburg, 1764. 2 volumes in one folio volume, ivory vellum, double gilt scroll border with coats of arms at the corners, large heraldic stamp in the centre, spine decorated with the same coats of arms repeated, mottled edges, traces of fastenings (contemporary Dutch binding). First edition of this rare and highly regarded book on the antiquities of Sicily. This fine work, published by Pieter Burman the Younger, is adorned with a portrait engraved by Houbraken after Quinkhard, a title vignette by Schley (repeated), a heraldic headband by Vinkeles, and 54 plates, often fold-out, depicting ancient monuments, objects and coins. A very fine copy bearing the coat of arms of the city of Amsterdam. From the Roger Peyrefitte library (1976, I, no. 102), with bookplate. A tear on the half-title page, with no loss of text.
