OVID. *The Metamorphoses*, in Latin and French, translated by Abbé Banier, with historical notes. Paris, Le Clerc [later] Nyon the Elder, 1767–1770. 4 volumes in-4, green morocco, gilt scrolls framing the edges, plain spine decorated with scrolls and small gilt fleurons, circular volume number label in mosaic red morocco, scrolls on the edges, gilt interior scrolls, gilt edges (contemporary binding). One of the finest illustrated works of the 18th century, produced under the supervision of the publisher Basan and the engraver Le Mire. It comprises a frontispiece title page, 3 dedication plates, 30 vignettes, 4 fleurons on the title pages and a full-page cul-de-lampe, engraved by Choffard after his own drawings or those of Monnet, and 139 illustrations drawn by Boucher, Eisen, Gravelot, Le Prince, Monnet, Moreau, Parizeau, Saint-Gois and engraved by Baquoy, Basan, Binet, Duclos, de Ghendt, Le Mire, etc. A very fine copy with wide margins in an elegant contemporary green morocco binding. It comes from the second printing under this date, with the fourth volume dated 1770 and a mention of privilege on the frontispiece. Discreet restoration to the headbands and corners; spine very slightly lightened. The final two pages of instructions to the bookbinder have not been preserved. Cohen, 769–772.
