RÉGNIER-DESMARAIS (François-Séraphin). History of the Disputes between the Court of France and the Court of Rome concerning the Corsican Affair. No place, no publisher, 1707. 2 parts in one quarto volume, grained calfskin, decorated spine, marbled edges (contemporary binding). First edition. Abbé Régnier-Desmarais (1632–1713) had accompanied the Duke of Créquy to Rome in 1662; the Duke was Louis XIV’s ambassador extraordinary to the Holy See, tasked with examining relations between the two courts on the question of Corsica. This embassy notably marked the end of the Corsican Papal Guard, following a clash between Corsican soldiers and the entourage of the French ambassador, which escalated into a diplomatic incident. The unsigned frontispiece depicts the ‘pyramid of infamy’ erected in Rome in 1664, at the request of Louis XIV, to curse the Corsicans who had dared to defy French authority.
