Description
ROUSSEAU (Jean-Jacques). Works. Paris, Defer de Maisonneuve, later J. E. G. Dufour, 1793–[1800]. 18 volumes, large quarto, red long-grain half-maroquin with corners, decorated spine, untrimmed (bound by Martin). A monumental typographical edition printed on vellum paper under the supervision of Pierre-François Didot. Some volumes were printed in a run of only 400 copies, whilst others were printed in a run of 500. The illustrations include a portrait of Rousseau by Langlois and 24 (out of 34) en-plaques engraved after Cochin, Monsiau, De Ghendt, Pauquet, Regnault and Vincent. ‘Monsiau’s engravings, particularly those in the *Confessions*, are charming’ (Cohen). There is also a facsimile, a folded plate and 24 music plates. A fine copy with wide margins in uniform bindings dated from the early 19th century. 10 plates are missing. Worn corners and other minor signs of wear to the bindings; scattered foxing. Cohen, 913.
