Description
ROZIER (François). A Comprehensive Course in Theoretical, Practical and Economic Agriculture, and in Rural and Veterinary Medicine. Paris, Hôtel Serpente [Cuchet], later Marchant, Drevet, et al., 1781–1805. 12 volumes in-4, fawn half-calf, smooth spine with decoration, marbled edges (Early 19th-century binding). First edition of this famous universal encyclopaedia of agriculture compiled by Abbé Rozier with the assistance of a society of farmers. Following the death of Abbé Rozier, who was killed by a bomb during the siege of Lyon in 1793, the work was completed by Parmentier, Chaptal, Thouin, Sonnini, Gilbert, Lasteyrie, and others. The illustrations comprise an allegorical frontispiece featuring the author’s bust, engraved by Tardieu, 261 plates (including 19 fold-out plates), 10 tables, 6 plans (including 3 fold-out plans) and one fold-out map. All the illustrations were engraved by Sellier up to the ninth volume, and thereafter by Tardieu and Moisy. A well-bound copy, with the last two volumes published as they appeared.
