SAURIN (Jacques). Historical, Critical, Theological and Moral Discourses on the Most Memorable Events of the Old and New Testaments. Amsterdam, Bernard Picart; later The Hague, Pierre de Hondt, 1720–1739. 6 volumes, large folio (485 x 355 mm), stiff vellum, double border of two blind-stamped lines, central blind-stamped medallion, spine decorated with gilt motifs, smooth edges (contemporary Dutch binding). First edition of the ‘Saurin Bible’, a monumental publication of which the Protestant preacher Jacques Saurin (1677–1730) compiled only the first two volumes; the remainder of the Old Testament was written by Pierre Roques (1685–1748), a pastor in Basel, and the New Testament by Charles-Louis de Beausobre (1690–1753). Superb biblical illustrations, comprising 2 frontispiece title pages and 212 magnificent plates, including 27 double-page plates, etched and chiselled after compositions by Gerard Hoet, Arnold Houbraken, Bernard Picart, as well as A. van Leyden, Bourdon, Carrache, Philippe de Champaigne, Le Brun, Carlo Maratta and Raphael. Each plate is captioned in Hebrew, Latin, English, French, German and Dutch. A copy on imperial-size paper, the very rare first paper edition, in contemporary Dutch bindings.
