SENAULT (Louis). *Heures nouvelles tirées de la Sainte Écriture*. Paris: published by the author and Claude de Hansy, n.d. [c. 1730]. In-8, olive morocco, composite metalwork border forming a chain of medallions set with scrolls and serrated fillets, sunflower motifs in the spandrels, decorated spine, red morocco lining edged with a wide lace border, gilt edges (contemporary binding). A masterpiece of calligraphy, this famous book of hours was engraved with a burin by the master scribe Louis Senault (1630–c. 1680), who drew the text and the ornaments adorning each page: garlands of flowers, pen-and-ink calligraphy, ornate letters, etc. The work enjoyed great success and was continually reprinted. This is a copy from the second printing, recognisable by the presence of medallions concealing the breasts of the ‘immodest sirens’ featured in certain engraved headbands. A delightful contemporary lined binding, adorned with a rich border of medallions composed of metalwork in various styles, reminiscent of ‘La Vieuville’-style bindings. Notably, it features an interlaced die intended for fanfare-style decorations, a garland die and a sun die used as a sunflower motif. The straight lace on the lining was made using small irons and edged on the inside with a row of very small sunflower-shaped irons. From the Georges Wendling library, with bookplate.
