AUMALE (Henri d’Orléans, Duke of). History of the Princes of Condé during the 16th and 17th centuries. Paris, Michel Lévy, 1863–1896. 8 volumes in-8, blue morocco, double blind-stamped raised band, spine decorated in the same style, red morocco endpapers, wide gilt lace and coat of arms in the centre, red moiré endpapers, double endpapers, gilt edges (Lortic). First edition of this ‘considerable work, the first two volumes of which were seized by the police of the Second Empire, but which were released for sale following an appeal to the Council of State in May 1867. The later volumes, published between 1886 and 1896, confirm the Duke of Aumale’s talents as a clear and vivid historian’ (Saffroy). The work is illustrated with 8 separate portrait plates and 8 fold-out maps. The final volume contains the index and the analytical table. One of the copies printed on Holland paper, complete with all eight volumes published between 1863 and 1896. Autograph dedication signed by the author in the first volume: ‘Presented to Gouverneur, 14 December 1869, H. d’Orléans’. The copy is in sumptuous bindings lined with red morocco leather featuring lacework, embossed with the coat of arms of the House of Orléans, signed Lortic, Lortic frères and later Lortic fils. The index volume has been bound in half-blue morocco with corners, featuring a uniform spine. Rare foxing. Vicaire, I, 154 – Saffroy, I, no. 11588.
