CAMUCCINI (Vincenzo). The Principal Events in the Life of Our Lord Jesus Christ, depicted in lithographs, published for the first time with the corresponding Latin, Italian and French texts. Rome, Salviucci & Figlio, 1829. 2 folio volumes (445 x 320 mm), green half-goatskin with corners, plain decorated spine, yellow edges (contemporary Italian binding). First edition, illustrated with 84 two-tone lithographs by Vincenzo Camuccini (1771–1844). This magnificent illustrated Gospel was commissioned from the Roman painter and lithographer by Pope Leo XII and published by Giuseppe Salviucci in a print run of just 300 copies. It is ‘one of the most important European lithographic works of the first half of the nineteenth century’, according to Christian Omodeo, ‘owing to the prominence of the patron, the number of plates produced, and the quality of the compositions on stone’. A very fine copy, enhanced by a portrait of the artist engraved by Pietro Bettelini after a drawing by Thomas Lawrence. It includes a signed autograph dedication by Camuccini to the collector Alfred de Jobal, written in French on the first endpaper. A few scattered foxing spots; minute wormholes on one edge.
