DU BOYS (Albert) and Victor CASSIEN. Album du Vivarais, or A Historical and Descriptive Itinerary of this Former Province. Grenoble, Prudhomme, 1842. Quarto, midnight blue half-shagreen, gilt fillet, plain gilt spine, gilt head, untrimmed, cover (Flammarion-Vaillant). A ‘rare and sought-after’ first edition of this ‘beautiful album on the hillsides of the Ardèche’ (Jacques Perret), published by the historian Albert Du Boys (1804–1889), a member of the Académie delphinale. The illustrations comprise 40 separate plates, drawn and lithographed by the Grenoble-based painter and lithographer Victor Cassien (1808–1893), depicting views of the most remarkable landscapes and monuments of the Vivarais. Copies from the second print run contain one additional lithograph. An exceptional copy in which all the plates have been delicately coloured in period. It is thought to have come from Cassien’s library, according to a pencil note on a flyleaf. A copy with wide margins (314 x 230 mm), complete with the rare cover printed with the address in Grenoble: Charles Vellot, 1843. Worn spine and endpapers, with a few foxing spots that do not affect the plates. Perret, no. 1406.
