[ONOFRIO (Jean-Baptiste)]. The Guignol Theatre in Lyon. Lyon, [Louis Perrin for] N. Scheuring, 1865–1870. 2 volumes in-8, havana morocco, triple cold-stamped fillet binding with gilded fleurons at the corners and centre, a lion on the first volume, a flower on the second, spine decorated in the same manner, linings of long-grain black morocco decorated with a double border of rich gilded lace, multicoloured embroidered silk endpapers, triple marbled endpapers, gilt headband, untrimmed (Bruyère). Complete first edition of both series, published with an introduction and notes by Claudius Brouchoud. Luxuriously printed by Louis Perrin, the volume is adorned with a frontispiece and head pieces executed in etching by the Lyon-based engraver Jean-Marie Fugère. One of the few copies on large-format Dutch laid paper, with the etchings printed in bistre. A unique copy adorned with 420 original pen-and-ink drawings by Charles-François Combe (1828–1877), a painter and etcher born in Dieulefit, executed in the margins of the volumes or as full-page illustrations, sometimes enhanced with coloured ink; some are signed and dated between 1867 and 1870. The first volume contains 120 of these and the second 300. Exceptional lined bindings by the excellent Lyon-based bookbinder Jean-Pierre Bruyère, whose ‘good taste in gilding, sure hand, the superb craftsmanship of the book block’ had been recognised with a first-class medal at the 1855 Paris World’s Fair. From the library of Eugène Chaper (1827–1890) of Grenoble, one of the most illustrious collectors in the Dauphiné region, who served as a Member of Parliament for Isère from 1871 to 1876, with a handwritten bookplate at the front of each volume.
