VACQUERIE (Auguste). Les Miettes de l'Histoire. Paris, Pagnerre, 1863. In-8 (230 x 150 mm), red Jansenist morocco, interior lace, gilt headband, untrimmed (E. Thomas, Lyon, 1863). First edition. A copy on large laid paper; according to Vicaire, ‘50 copies on laid vellum paper (sic)’ were printed from this book. Autograph dedication signed by the author to Auguste Duval. A unique copy adorned with numerous original pen-and-ink drawings by Charles-François Combe (1828–1877), a painter and etcher born in Dieulefit, executed in black ink, sometimes enhanced with coloured watercolour or gold, either full-page or interspersed within the text as vignettes and tailpieces; some of which are signed and dated 1863. The title page and dedication have been illuminated. The volume has also been enriched with two photographic portraits of Combe and Duval, printed using the period albumen process. A very fine copy, bound in red Jansenist morocco by E. Thomas in the year of its publication. Missing the final advertisement leaflet. From the Auguste Duval library, with bookplate.
