[BIBLE]. The Holy Bible. The Old and New Testaments according to the Vulgate edition, with some annotations by Johannes Benedictus. Paris, Jacques Kerver, 1573. 2 parts in one large 8vo volume, midnight blue calfskin, gilt fillet and blind-stamped scroll, decorated spine, decorated edges, marbled edges (19th-century binding). A rare edition, reprinted by Jacques Kerver. It presents the text of the Vulgate revised by the theologian Jean Benoît (1484–1573), parish priest of the Parisian church of Saints-Innocents, together with its four indexes. It is illustrated with 105 metal-engraved vignettes, imitating the woodcuts of Hans Holbein, used for the first time to illustrate a Latin Bible in Pierre Regnault’s Parisian edition of 1540. Some are monogrammed PR and IF. The titles of the two parts are adorned with Jacques Kerver’s large unicorn mark. The last index leaf (O8) is missing. Title page soiled with minor marginal worm damage, small marginal water stains, and rubbed headbands and edges. Delaveau & Hillard, no. 933 – Brun, pp. 47 and 126.
