Description
GOBERT (Thomas). A Treatise on the Practice of Moving Forces, Demonstrating the Impossibility of Perpetual Motion through the Necessity of Equilibrium. Paris, Jean-Baptiste Delespine, 1702. Quarto, grained calfskin, decorated spine, roulette on the edges, marbled edges (contemporary binding). First edition. The illustrations comprise 29 figures within the text and 3 copper-engraved headbands. Thomas Gobert, an architect and later the King’s Intendant of Buildings, constructed the water supply network for the lakes in the Trappes, Arcy and Saclay plains to supply water to the park of the Palace of Versailles between 1678 and 1680. He included in this booklet a treatise on mathematics, a curious calculation of the Earth’s gravitational weight, and finally a description of a spirit level of his own invention. Title page missing. Brown stains on the endpapers and in the margins of a few leaves; a tear on pp. 56–57, with no pages missing. Poggendorff, I, 918.
