Description
MONTLUC (Blaise de). *Memoirs and Commentaries*. Paris, Robert Foüet, 1596. Folio, brown calfskin, decorated spine, marbled edges (17th-century binding). A reissue of the first edition published in Bordeaux by Simon Millanges in 1592. Only the title page has been reprinted, misleadingly presenting the edition as having been revised, corrected and expanded shortly before the author’s death. A veritable ‘soldier’s breviary’ according to Henry IV, the memoirs of Marshal de Monluc (1502?–1577) are of great importance to the military history of the 16th century. They cover a vast period, from 1521 to 1576. Signature at the top of the title page: P. Delbene. Incomplete, missing folios 77–78. Binding worn with slight losses, split joints, worn caps, scattered foxing and water stains; some leaves are stitched.
