[MURER (Christoph)]. [XL emblemata miscella nova]. [Zurich, J. R. Wolffen, 1622]. Oblong 8vo, fawn sheepskin, double gilt rule, plain spine decorated in the same manner, handwritten labels at head and foot, mottled edges (contemporary binding). First impression of these 38 (out of 40) emblems engraved on copper by Christoph Murer (1558–1614), taken from the extremely rare original Zurich edition of the *Quadraginta emblemata miscella nova* published by Johann Heinrich Rordorff in 1622. The engravings have been trimmed to the edge and mounted without the printed captions or Rordorff’s text. The Latin captions and plate numbers were added by hand above the engravings at an earlier date. A 19th-century handwritten note on the back cover. From the libraries of Charles Lenormant du Coudray (1712–1789), with his initials and signature on the endpapers (L. 1706), and from the Château de Cormes, with an ex-libris stamp. Two engravings from the set are missing. Scattered foxing and stains; a small marginal loss on plate [33]; worn caps and corners; rubbed covers. Praz, 415–416 – Landwehr, German, no. 512.
