Description
[MUSSARD (Pierre)]. The Conformity of Modern Ceremonies with Ancient Ones. No place, no publisher [Geneva, Jean-Antoine and Samuel de Tournes], 1667. In-8, ivory vellum, plain spine, marbled edges (contemporary binding). A rare first edition. The Genevan pastor Pierre Mussard (1627–1686) sets out to demonstrate in this work ‘that the ceremonies of the Roman Church are borrowed from the pagans’. The book was immediately placed on the Index. There is another edition bearing the same date, published by Jean Sambix the Younger in Leiden. One corner clipped, foxing and small marginal stains.
