PHILOSTRATUS. *Les Images ou tableaux de platte-peinture*. Paris, Nicolas Chesneau, 1578. In-4, vellum with overcover, plain spine (contemporary binding). First edition of Blaise de Vigenère’s remarkable French translation, enriched with his annotations.
The Images by the Greek sophist Philostratus of Lemnos comprise a series of over sixty descriptions of mythological paintings that were housed in a private gallery near Naples at the turn of the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.
From the library of the Minimes of Roanne, with a handwritten bookplate on the title page. The copy is thought to have subsequently belonged to the philosopher Ferdinand Alquié (1906–1985), according to a handwritten note on the second endpaper.
Missing the final errata leaf (gggg2). Scattered faint water stains.
