Description
[CHIMNEY SWEEPERS]. Interviews regarding the establishment for young chimney sweeps. Paris, at the central administrative office, 1828. In-12, long-grain red morocco, gilt lace, coat of arms in the centre, plain gilt spine, twisted cord inside, gilt edges (contemporary binding). The only edition of this rare pamphlet, sold to raise funds for a charitable institution founded on Rue d’Orléans-Saint-Marcel (now Rue Daubenton) ‘for the benefit of young chimney sweeps, to rescue them from idleness, vagrancy, begging and all the vices and crimes that often result from them, by providing them with a secure refuge, steady work, an honest livelihood, sufficient knowledge for hard-working craftsmen, and by training them in the practice of social virtues’, as the title states. A copy bearing the coat of arms of Louis-Philippe (1773–1850), Duke of Orléans, who was crowned King of the French two years later, with the stamp of the King’s Library at the Palais-Royal on the title page. It is not listed in the 1852 auction catalogue. Corners slightly rubbed, foxing.
