Description
RANCHIN (François). *Opuscules, or Various and Curious Treatises on Medicine*. Lyon, Pierre Ravaud, 1640. In-8, soft vellum (contemporary binding). First edition. The work comprises eight treatises, the first of which, occupying half the volume, is devoted to the plague and contains an account of the epidemic that raged in Montpellier in 1629–1630 – an important account, as the author was at that time First Consul and Viguier of the city. The following treatises deal with leprosy and smallpox, but also with more curious subjects, such as the illnesses and accidents befalling those who travel by post, the after-effects of the gehenna (or torture) and the estrapade inflicted on criminals, the ‘bleeding of corpses’ (a medieval superstition according to which the wounds of a corpse would begin to bleed again in the presence of its murderer), the nature and characteristics of deer, and even the scent of violets that turpentine imparts to urine. Water stains at the top and bottom of the volume; scattered foxing.
