Description
VERRIEN (Nicolas). A collection of emblems, mottos, medals and hieroglyphic figures, numbering over twelve hundred, with their explanations. Paris, Claude Jombert, 1724. 3 parts in one in-8 volume, marbled calfskin, decorated spine, red edges (contemporary binding). Third edition of *Livre curieux et utile pour les sçavans et artistes* (*A Curious and Useful Book for Scholars and Artists*), published in 1685 by the engraver Nicolas Verrien, who adapted the tradition of emblem books to the fine arts. This famous collection, intended for artists and craftsmen, contains a portrait of the author by Edelinck after Jouvenet, an engraved title page featuring a large allegorical figure on the reverse, and a dedication page to the Dauphin. Each of the three parts is preceded by an intermediate title plate engraved on copper. The first part contains 62 plates of emblematic medallions; the second, 154 plates of interlaced figures; and the third, 17 plates of heraldic supports and crests. All these plates are printed on both sides. The engraved general title page and dedication have been bound between the first and second parts, as has the ‘Explanation of the Medals’ from the second volume. Two worn corners with losses.
