VULSON DE LA COLOMBIÈRE (Marc de). *La Science héroïque*, dealing with the nobility, the origin of coats of arms, their emblems and symbols… With a brief genealogy of the House of Rosmadec in Brittany. Paris, Sébastien and Gabriel Cramoisy, 1644. 2 parts in one folio volume, brown calfskin, double gilt rule, decorated spine, marbled edges (contemporary binding). First edition of one of the great treatises on heraldry of the 17th century, whose author ‘may be regarded as the true founder of the science of heraldry’, according to Alphonse Feillet. The illustrations comprise a title vignette, an allegorical frontispiece by Grégoire Huret, a portrait of the Marquis de Rosmadec, a portrait of the author and a plate bearing his coat of arms, and a large number of coats of arms engraved with a burin within the text, as well as on nine separate plates (between pp. 428–429 and after p. 494). The second part, on *La Généalogie de la maison de Rosmadec*, is illustrated with a heraldic title-frontispiece and six genealogical plates. Handwritten bookplate on the title page: *Collegi Societatis Jesu Insulis 1748*. The half-titles of *La Science héroïque* and the final leaves of the volume have been re-margined; pp. 381–384 are missing; there are light foxing spots and some marks; a stain on p. 157. Some leaves have narrower margins. Rosmadec’s *Généalogie* appears to be incomplete (collation differs from that of Saffroy); the view and plan of Kergournadech Castle are missing.
