Description
[LE LABOUREUR (Claude)]. The Mazures of the Royal Abbey of Isle-Barbe near Lyon, or a historical account of all the most memorable events in this church from its foundation to the present day, together with a list of all its abbots. Paris, Jean Couterot, 1681. 2 volumes in-4, red morocco, double blind-stamped border, gilt emblem in the centre, spine decorated with blind-stamped panels, inner lace, gilt edges on marbled paper (Duru, 1854). First edition, second printing, expanded to include the second volume. The first part, published in 1665 by Claude Galbit in Lyon, was not out of print when the author published the second part in 1681 in Paris. The Parisian publisher bought up the unsold copies from the Lyon print run, of which he merely had the title page reprinted, adding his own name and the date 1681, as well as a few endpapers. The second volume is from the first print run. A superb copy, beautifully prepared by Duru, complete with the supplement published in 1846 by Rivoire, a bookseller in Lyon, bound in the places designated by the publisher. From the library of Antoine Poncer of Annonay, with a stencilled bookplate on the title pages. A few handwritten annotations were added in the margins in the 18th century (some of which have been slightly trimmed by the bookbinder). A copy belonging to Louis Brun (1851–1940), alias ‘Nobirulus’, a bookseller and historian from Lyon, son and successor to the bookseller Auguste Brun, bearing his gilt emblem featuring the coat of arms of Lyon. Minor wear to the corners of the second volume; handwritten call number labels at the end. Brunet, III, 955 – Saffroy, II, no. 28000.
