Description
VILLIERS (Claude Deschamps de). *Le Festin de Pierre, ou le fils criminel*. Tragicomedy, translated from Italian into French by Sieur de Villiers. Paris, Charles de Sercy, 1660. In-12, soft vellum (contemporary binding). An extremely rare first edition, dedicated ‘to Monsieur de Corneille, in his spare moments’.
This tragicomedy in verse is the second French adaptation, following Dorimond’s work of the same title, of the Spanish legend of Don Juan Tenorio. Both are likely based on a lost play by Giliberto, *Il Convitato di pietra*.
Its most famous French adaptation is the third, Molière’s *Dom Juan ou le Festin de Pierre*, performed in 1665, for which he drew inspiration from the plays by Dorimond and Villiers.
A worn copy, with worm damage and marginal repairs occasionally affecting one or two characters, marginal water stains, replaced endpapers, and a stained binding with slight losses.
